Our program offers support services to the youth as well. Each youth is given a mentor and a peer leader to assist them with every day support. As well as at different times of the month there are support groups that meet (i.e. Teen parent, children of domestic violence, foster children etc). Youth are given job preparation skills and set up with volunteer, intership and paying positions though various companies, whom we have written to for this type of assistance. Youth even receive assistance with obtaining a drivers permit or license. During the school year we work very closely with the parents and schools attended by the youth in our programs. We accompany parents to parent teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and any other educational support assistance they may need. We also have family mediation sessions and literacy programs for the families of our youth. Because our youth are disadvantage many of them have never had an opportunity to experience any type of trips or outings. We have taken them to the movies, plays, Great Adventure, Dorney park, museums and zoo s. We are currently working on fundraisers to raise enough money to take a trip to Disney world. Our founder, Elaine Newkirk, is a 33 year old single mother. She has 1 biological child and has adopted 4 children, one of which has multiple disabilities. She has been a foster parent for 10 years and has taken in over 50 children. She has dedicated her life to helping youth make changes in their lives and succeed. She has received honors from Senators and Mayors. She has been on the covers of 3 newspapers and is very outspoken in her community. She works very closely with The Division of Youth and Family services (DYFS) and sits on their advisory board to assist in decisiCHNKWKS вјаTEXTTEXT„ЋFDPPFDPPЎFDPPFDPPАFDPPFDPPВFDPPFDPPДFDPPFDPPЖFDPPFDPPИFDPCFDPCКFDPCFDPCМFDPCFDPCОFDPCFDPCРSTSHSTSHТ|STSHSTSH|УоSYIDSYIDZЦSGP SGP nЦINK INK rЦBTEPPLC vЦ@BTECPLC ЖЦ0FONTFONTцЦ’Teen parent, F. M. Kirby Foundation, Inc. 17 DeHart St. P.O. Box 151 Morristown, NJ 07963-0151 August 4, 2003 Dear Sir/Madam, TYME Ministries & Management Inc. Would like to thank you for The opportunity to be considered for a grant from your organization. We are a non profit organization serving children, youth and families, with a focus on children and youth. We are an organization dedicated to meeting the needs of the youth in Essex and Union County communities. The youth are often from low income, disadvantaged, and from very violent areas filled with gangs and violence. There are currently a total of 76 youth, ranging from the ages of 4-21 attending our programs. We currently are open 2-3 days a week. Once we receive funding we will have a 7 day a week program. Our normal hours of operation are 6pm -10pm, but we are usually there until 12am because they just don t want to go home. It is very important the youth have a place to go where they can feel safe. Many of the youth are from low income backgrounds so we provide transportation as much as possible. We also provide them with a complete meals and snacks while attending the meetings. There are books and pamphlets on everything from learning to read to staying out of gangs and teen suicide. There are professional speakers who come in from time to time to speak on such topics as HIV, Domestic violence, self esteem etc. Once a month The founder, Ms. Newkirk, Has a sleep weekend sleep over for the girls. There are usually about 23 girls in attendance. Movies are rented, popcorn is popped and for one weekend the girls pretend they live in a safe and happy environment where wisheon making for young people. She is a community health worker educating people on such topics as Breast cancer, heart disease and HIV to name a few. There are many other committees she sits on the can be provided upon request. It is the desire of TYME Ministries & Management Inc. to secure funding to open its doors to the youth in the community 7 days a week, from the hours of 9Am to 11PM. All year round. The funding needed for this to happen is $145,343.00. The rest of this proposal will detail our program and its needs. On October 25, 2003 we are planning our first annual Youth Against Violence day. There will be food, games, giveaways and tables of information. We are expecting speakers from The Governors office, The Mayors office, police and fire department, former gang members, domestic violence shelters and many more. We want to thank you in advance for your consideration of funding our program. Should you decide not to fund our program please feel free to attend any of the events stated in this proposal or you time spent as a mentor to one of our youth is just as valuable to us. Sincerely, Elaine Newkirk, CEO TYME Ministries & Management Inc. Reaches out to youth from all walks of life. TYME which means Teach Youth Motivate And Empower is dedicated to doing just that. Youth are brought together in a healthy and safe environment, where thy can receive Educational, Cultural, Recreational, Social and spiritual support. Youth are encouraged to leave their troubles at the door and be free, even if just for a couple of hours. Founder Elaine Newkirk, Came from a background similar to that of the youth she has set out to help. She wanted to show them that just because in your environment there are drugs, gangs, and violence, you don t have to go that way. You can overcome whatever life brings your way and succeed if you want to. The Program began in her living room with 12 youth from her church and community. The youth were there to just talk or rap. By the end of the session the youth and Elaine were in tears. They talked about there community, families, lives and themselves. They needed a change, they needed hope, and they needed someone to believe in them. It was TYME to make a difference in their lives. They decided to meet once a week and hold rap sessions. Three months later Elaine s living room could no longer hold the 39 children that were now attending. She began looking for space. She found a local church that had out grown their space. The building was empty on Saturdays and in the evening. The church offered her the space as well as an office space but the price was more than she could afford. After hearing of the work Elaine was doing with the youth. The pastor of the church decided to let her have the space for М of what he had offered her, but she could only use the building 2 days a week. All though it still was a stretch financially Elaine knew it was needed and agreed. The youth were very happy. They had one day to use for their rap session and another to just hang out. Elaine set up programs to meet the needs of the youth. There were Thanksgiving baskets and Christmas gifts given out. We received donations of school supplies, clothing, food and books. The program quickly grew to over 76 youth and each week the youth bring someone else to the program. We begin to receive volunteers and people wanting to mentor the youth as well as the youth themselves wanted to help. Some youth were selected to go though a peer leadership program and peer with youth from similar backgrounds as an ongoing effort of support and friendship. The relationship with DYFS was strengthened and Youth in the foster care system were included in the program. As well as from various community organizations, church and the Juvenile Justice system. We have youth in our program who are from different backgrounds, races, religions, sexual preferences and communities. Who have befriended one another and learned to live together and make this world a better place. They are from My community and Your community. Helping them now, will make it a better experience when we run into them later. Our first Goal is to reach out to youth who are disadvantaged, low income or subject to crime and violence. We want to target this population because statistics show that they are at a higher risk of teen pregnancy, poor health, dropping out of school, gang activity and other violence. By reaching out to youth at a very early age we plan to lower these statistics. All youth are welcome, however there is no charge to youth who fall in the above categories and want to participate in any of the programs listed below. Teen Parent Support Services Young parents (male and female) receive support with Budgeting, staying in school, childcare, work, family planning and parenting skills. This support group meets once a month. Mentoring Programs Big brother/sister type of services. Mentors are there for youth to talk to, get support from and befriend. They visit the schools to check on grades and progress. They speak with youth on a regular basis for ongoing support. Peer leaders are youth who have gone through a leadership program and are paired up with youth of similar age and background, they mentor from a youth point of view. For example we may pair up a new teen parent with another teen parent who is currently working on a successful project. All mentors are fingerprinted and go through a thorough background check. Tutoring Program Youth receive help with reading, math, homework and GED preparation, as well as any other courses needed. Employment and Educational Assistance Job skills and preparation, placement assistance, scholarships, business entrepreneurship, and stay in school programs. W.O.R.D. - Women Of Renewed Destiny A rights of passage type program for Young women and Women ages 16-30. They come together to talk and learn from one another about issues only women can face. Such topics include health issues, being a mom, relationships, being a working parent, family planning and breast cancer awareness. There are also hands on lessons in cooking, sewing general housekeeping and budgeting. L.I.F.E- Living In A Free Environment A program for young men similar to that of WORD. It focus on keeping young men out of the prison system and keeping families together. Both WORD And LIFE Offer job training, preparation and placement searches. Secondly, We will reach out to youth from all walks of life and have them come together to learn from, understand and befriend one another. This will help to bridge the racial divide facing our country today. By bringing youth from all over together, it will allow them to get to know one another and begin to break down some of the stereotypes that separate us and cause confusion. Rap Sessions Youth discuss current events and issues affecting their lives and the lives of those around them. Some topics have included the Iraq war, 9/11, HIV/AIDS/STD s, should parents be held responsible for the actions of a minor, mock trial, etc. Recreational and Performing arts Youth participate in various activities such as Bowling, ping-pong, Board games, basket-ball, football, Dance, step/cheerleading, singing and acting just to name a few. As well as trips and outings. News Letter Youth put together a monthly news letter of their poetry, stories, photography and drawings, there is also a space for current events and an advice column. Socialization Through this program youth learn socialization skills. It is very important young people learn to befriend those who are different from them. Our youth learn to associate with your from different races, religious backgrounds, and sexual orientation. They are taught that while they may not agree with certain things everyone should be respected and no one should be discriminated against. We all must live in this world together. Family Supports We realize we cannot help the youth then send them back to a completely dysfunctional family. Therefore we have extended some services to include the family as a whole. These include family mediation, parenting skills, literacy and educational support as well as an emergency food pantry and referrals when needed. We also have a support group for parents or caregivers of children with disabilities. They meet once a month. Lastly, we want to provide our youth with morals and values. Bringing spirituality into focus. While it is strictly voluntary and we do not impose on anyone s religion, we delicately bring faith into focus as a foundation for morals and values and when trying to make a change in one s life. We are a Christian based organization, Prayer is held before and at the end of all meetings. Youth who do not wish to participate in the prayer do not have to and are respected for their decision. Youth Ministry Youth services and spiritual guidance. All are welcome. It is free will and not a requirement to attend. Founder Elaine Newkirk is a Chaplain who volunteers in the juvenile justice system, soup kitchens, hospitals and anywhere else needed. We work very closely with the following community organizations and churches: Division of Youth and Family Services, Newark s E-Yes, Robertson Resource Center, Babyland Family services, Mayor Wayne Smith of Irvington, Montclair s CIACC, International black women s congress, Education for every one, Developmental Disabilities counsel, local Schools, Little Mount Bethel, Bethel assembly, Bible way house of prayer and the United International Worldwide Chaplain Out reach, Parents Anonymous, SPAN and many more. As you can see we are a very well rounded and much needed program. Our future endeavors include the following: * Independent living housing program for youth aging out of the foster care system. * Shelter for homeless and runaway youth. * Independent living program for pregnant and teen parents * Daycare and private school for grades K-12 The program is designed to be one that is an out let for youth to go when they feel they have no where else to go. Our rap sessions and seminars cover topics youth can relate to and express their opinions without fear of ridicule. We teach youth a variety of skills that will enhance their lives. Our youth are taught the future is what you make it, and our future depends on them. They are the leaders of tomorrow. Get involved. It s TYME for a change. It s TYME to make a difference.
